The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning for four districts in Tamil Nadu as heavy rains are forecasted to hit the region over the next 48 hours. The red alert indicates extreme weather conditions, urging residents in the affected areas to stay alert and prepared for potential flooding and disruptions.
The districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu have been identified as the most vulnerable to intense rainfall, with the possibility of very heavy showers and thunderstorms. The weather department has warned of significant rainfall accumulation, which could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in transportation and daily life.
According to the weather department, the rains are expected to be caused by a low-pressure system that is forming in the Bay of Bengal, which is intensifying and moving toward the Tamil Nadu coast. The system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas experiencing up to 20 cm of rain in the coming days.
Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, particularly in low-lying areas, and advised the public to avoid venturing out during periods of heavy rainfall. The government has also mobilized teams for relief operations, with rescue and relief centres being set up in the affected districts.
In addition to the red alert, the weather department has issued orange and yellow warnings for other parts of Tamil Nadu, advising caution as the weather system continues to develop. While the situation is being closely monitored, residents in the affected regions are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and weather advisories.
