Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Malaysia from February 7 to 8, 2026, at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The visit is expected to focus on trade and investment, defence and security, and maritime cooperation, while also providing an opportunity to chart a roadmap for future engagements between the two nations.
Modi will hold bilateral talks with Anwar and meet with industry leaders, business representatives, and members of the Indian community in Malaysia. The visit will coincide with the 10th India-Malaysia CEOs Forum, which aims to strengthen commercial ties and foster collaboration in sectors such as digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
India and Malaysia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Anwar’s visit to New Delhi in August 2024. The visit marked a reset in bilateral relations after periods of tension under Anwar’s predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad. Since then, both countries have prioritized building a strong foundation for cooperation in strategic and economic domains.
Malaysia is India’s third-largest trading partner within the ASEAN region, with two-way trade reaching $20 billion in 2023-24. Malaysian investments in India, including via third-party routes, are estimated at $3.3 billion, with Malaysian construction companies maintaining their largest foreign presence in India. The bilateral relationship is further reinforced by a 2.9-million-strong Indian diaspora in Malaysia, the world’s third-largest.
During Anwar’s visit to India in 2024, the two sides signed an important agreement on recruitment and employment conditions for Indian workers in Malaysia, aimed at safeguarding the rights of approximately 185,000 Indian workers. Additionally, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will be connected with Malaysia’s Payments Network (PayNet), enabling seamless digital transactions between the two countries.
Defence cooperation has also steadily expanded, encompassing military training programs, joint exercises, and supply of defence equipment. India’s state-run aerospace and defence major, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), opened its first regional office in Kuala Lumpur in 2023, further strengthening strategic ties.
Modi’s visit is expected to reinforce India-Malaysia relations across trade, security, and technological domains, while highlighting the enduring bond between the two nations through shared economic, defence, and cultural initiatives.
