The Northeast region is set to take a major step toward strengthening its tourism sector, with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma preparing to present a comprehensive roadmap aimed at promoting the entire region as a single tourism destination. The proposal will be discussed during the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session in Shillong, where leaders from all eight northeastern states will gather to deliberate on key regional development initiatives.
Speaking ahead of the plenary session scheduled for Thursday, Sangma emphasized the importance of collective branding and cooperation among the northeastern states. He noted that while each state possesses unique attractions and cultural identities, presenting the Northeast as a unified tourism destination could significantly enhance its visibility and appeal in domestic and international markets.
Sangma, who currently chairs the high-level task force on tourism for the Northeast, said the report focuses on strategies that would enable the region to market itself collectively rather than as individual states competing for tourist attention. According to him, a coordinated approach would allow the Northeast to leverage its combined natural beauty, cultural diversity, adventure tourism opportunities, and heritage attractions.
The NEC plenary meeting will be chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by chief ministers and governors from across the Northeast. The gathering is expected to serve as an important platform for discussing regional development priorities and evaluating recommendations submitted by several sectoral task forces established by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Sangma praised Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia for actively encouraging collaboration among northeastern states through these task forces. Committees have been formed for multiple sectors, including tourism, youth development, trade, infrastructure, and economic growth. Each task force is led by a chief minister and includes representatives from various states in the region.
According to Sangma, one of the key objectives of the plenary session will be to review the findings and recommendations of these task forces and develop practical mechanisms to ensure their implementation. He expressed optimism that extensive consultations and discussions among stakeholders would help accelerate developmental initiatives across the Northeast.
Beyond tourism, the NEC meeting is expected to address a range of issues related to regional connectivity, infrastructure development, economic opportunities, and youth empowerment. The discussions are likely to shape future policy directions and strengthen cooperation among northeastern states.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya is also preparing to host several high-profile visits by Union ministers in the coming weeks. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda is scheduled to visit Shillong on June 5, while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to visit the state later this month.
The upcoming NEC plenary is being viewed as a significant opportunity to advance a shared vision for the Northeast’s growth, with tourism emerging as one of the key pillars of regional development. If implemented successfully, the proposed roadmap could transform the Northeast into one of India’s most prominent and integrated tourism destinations.
