Maharashtra Police on Wednesday arrested Fahim Shamim Khan, a local leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), in connection with the recent communal violence in Nagpur. Authorities have identified Khan as the alleged mastermind behind the clashes that broke out on Monday following unverified reports of a religious book being burned during protests against the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb.
According to officials, Khan was taken into custody shortly after being named in the FIR. He has been remanded to police custody until March 21. A senior police officer stated that preliminary investigations, including video evidence, suggest Khan’s speech directly incited the violence.
Who is Fahim Shamim Khan?
Fahim Shamim Khan is a resident of Yashodhara Nagar and a known political figure in Maharashtra. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against BJP leader Nitin Gadkari but secured only around 1,400 votes. Following the Nagpur clashes, his photograph was released by police, along with a video showing him allegedly delivering an inflammatory speech before the violence erupted. The 18-page FIR lists Khan as one of the prime accused in the case.
Nagpur Violence: What Happened?
Violence broke out in Nagpur on Monday amid rumors that a ‘chadar’ with religious inscriptions was burned during protests organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) against Aurangzeb’s tomb. The situation escalated, leading to widespread unrest in the region. So far, police have arrested 55 individuals in connection with the riots.
On Wednesday, Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singhal visited the affected areas and confirmed that no further incidents had been reported since the imposition of the curfew. However, authorities have maintained a strict security presence, deploying around 2,000 armed personnel, including Quick Response Teams (QRT) and Riot Control Police (RCP), under the leadership of a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Patrolling continues in sensitive areas to prevent any further disturbances.
The situation remains tense but under control as investigations into the violence continue.
