The Kolkata High Court has expressed sharp disapproval of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its lackadaisical approach in probing the high-profile RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. The case, which has garnered significant public attention, involves the tragic assault and killing of a student within the premises of the well-known hospital.
During the recent hearing, the court questioned the slow pace of the investigation and slammed the CBI for failing to prioritize the sensitive nature of the case. In its observation, the court noted, “The investigation into such a serious crime shouldn’t be so casual. There must be a sense of urgency when dealing with incidents of this nature.” The bench, while expressing its dissatisfaction, emphasized the need for a more focused approach to deliver justice to the victim and her family.
The court’s remarks came after it was revealed that the investigative team had not made significant progress, raising concerns about the transparency and efficiency of the process. With mounting public outrage and calls for justice growing louder, the court has now instructed the CBI to expedite the probe and submit a detailed report in the coming weeks.
The RG Kar hospital incident, which took place earlier this year, sent shockwaves through the city, with protests erupting across Kolkata demanding swift action. The victim, a young medical student, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a hospital room, and subsequent investigations pointed toward foul play.
Despite the case being transferred to the CBI for an independent and thorough inquiry, the investigative body has faced repeated criticism over its handling of the case. The High Court has now set a clear expectation for the CBI to handle the investigation with the seriousness it warrants, reiterating that any delay could lead to further erosion of public trust in law enforcement agencies.
