Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain said visiting homes of terrorists killed by security forces and expressing sympathy for them in public was “normal”(ANI)

Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbag Singh, has alleged that certain political parties in the region have cultivated relationships with terror leaders to secure votes. This accusation has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the union territory, raising serious concerns about the nexus between politics and terrorism.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar on Sunday, DGP Singh stated, “There is substantial evidence that some political entities in Jammu and Kashmir have engaged with terror groups and their leaders, using these connections to influence electoral outcomes and garner votes. This unholy alliance has not only jeopardized the security of the region but has also undermined the democratic process.”

The DGP’s remarks come amid ongoing investigations into recent militant activities and their possible links to local political figures. Singh emphasized that the security forces are committed to rooting out terrorism and ensuring that those involved, regardless of their political stature, face the law.

“Anyone found guilty of such collusion will be dealt with sternly. We are here to protect the integrity of our democratic institutions and the safety of our citizens,” Singh added.

The allegations have ignited a firestorm of reactions from various political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Senior leaders from the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have categorically denied any involvement with terrorist organizations and have called for an independent investigation into the claims.

“This is a baseless accusation aimed at maligning the image of political parties that have always stood for peace and democratic values,” said Omar Abdullah, Vice-President of the NC. “We demand a thorough and impartial probe to uncover the truth and hold those spreading falsehoods accountable.”

Mehbooba Mufti, President of the PDP, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Our party has always condemned terrorism in all its forms. These allegations are politically motivated and an attempt to distract from the real issues facing Jammu and Kashmir.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, has backed the DGP’s claims, urging a detailed investigation and stringent action against those found guilty. “These revelations are a matter of grave concern. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve to know the truth about the ties between political leaders and terror outfits,” said BJP spokesperson Sunil Sethi.

As the controversy unfolds, security experts and analysts have highlighted the need for vigilance and transparency in addressing the alleged links between politics and militancy in the region. They stress the importance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring that security measures are in place to prevent such collusion in the future.

The allegations by DGP Singh have undoubtedly intensified the debate over the complex relationship between politics and security in Jammu and Kashmir. As investigations proceed, the region awaits clarity on the extent of these alleged connections and the potential ramifications for its political and social fabric.
