In a scathing critique of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) administration, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu released a white paper accusing Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government of severe fiscal mismanagement that has allegedly led to the economic downfall of Andhra Pradesh. The document, unveiled at a press conference in Amaravati, outlines what Naidu describes as “destructive policies” and “irresponsible governance” that have negatively impacted the state’s financial health.
“Jagan Reddy’s government has destroyed the economy of Andhra Pradesh. The state is now burdened with unprecedented debt, reduced investment, and failing public services,” Naidu declared. He emphasized that the white paper was a comprehensive analysis based on government data, highlighting the deteriorating fiscal indicators since the YSRCP came to power in 2019.
The white paper points to several key areas of concern, including:
- Rising Public Debt: According to Naidu, the state’s debt has soared to unsustainable levels, nearly doubling over the past four years. “The reckless borrowing by this government has pushed the state into a debt trap, with interest payments consuming a significant portion of the budget,” he said.
- Plummeting Investments: Naidu criticized the YSRCP for creating an environment of uncertainty that has deterred investors. “Industrial projects have stalled, and investor confidence is at an all-time low due to erratic policy decisions and a lack of support for businesses,” he noted.
- Welfare Schemes and Subsidies: While acknowledging the importance of welfare schemes, Naidu argued that the current government’s approach has been unsustainable. “The populist measures, without a clear financial plan, are draining the state’s resources and leaving little for developmental projects,” he explained.
- Mismanagement of Public Resources: The white paper alleges widespread corruption and inefficiency in the management of public resources. Naidu claimed that funds for development projects are being diverted or misused, leading to delays and cost overruns.
In response to the release of the white paper, YSRCP leaders dismissed Naidu’s claims as politically motivated. They defended their administration’s track record, citing various welfare initiatives and infrastructure projects launched under Jagan Reddy’s leadership. “Naidu is trying to mislead the public with false allegations. Our government is committed to the holistic development of Andhra Pradesh,” said a senior YSRCP spokesperson.
The release of the white paper comes ahead of the 2024 state elections, indicating a ramp-up in political rhetoric and positioning by both parties. Naidu urged the public to scrutinize the financial mismanagement under the current regime and called for a change in leadership to restore fiscal discipline and economic growth.
“We need a government that understands the principles of economic management and is committed to transparency and accountability. The future of Andhra Pradesh depends on it,” Naidu asserted.
As the political battle intensifies, the economic narrative is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming electoral campaigns, with both the TDP and YSRCP seeking to convince voters of their vision for the state’s future.
