Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate three advanced naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—to the nation on January 15, 2025, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This commissioning underscores India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in defense manufacturing and maritime security.
INS Surat: Masterpiece of Guided Missile Destroyers
INS Surat, the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is a technological marvel. With 75% indigenous content, it stands among the largest and most sophisticated destroyers globally. The vessel boasts state-of-the-art weapon-sensor systems and advanced network-centric capabilities, exemplifying India’s shipbuilding expertise.
INS Nilgiri: The Pinnacle of Stealth Frigate Design
The first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, INS Nilgiri, represents a significant evolution over the Shivalik-class frigates. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, it features advanced stealth technologies, reducing radar signature and enhancing combat effectiveness. Both INS Surat and Nilgiri are equipped to operate a range of helicopters, including the MH-60R, ensuring versatile operational capabilities.
INS Vaghsheer: A Silent Warrior Beneath the Waves
INS Vaghsheer, the final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, reflects India’s growing prowess in submarine construction. Built in collaboration with the French Naval Group, Vaghsheer is one of the world’s most silent and versatile diesel-electric submarines. Armed with wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and advanced sonar systems, it is capable of diverse missions, including anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, and special operations.
This historic commissioning event highlights India’s naval strength and its focus on indigenous defense manufacturing, paving the way for enhanced maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
