Comedian Samay Raina has been denied a fresh appearance date by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell, escalating his legal troubles in the ongoing ‘India’s Got Latent’ controversy. Authorities have directed him to join the investigation by February 17, despite his plea for an extension citing his overseas tour.
The controversy erupted after a highly inappropriate question was posed to a contestant on ‘India’s Got Latent,’ a YouTube-based comedy show featuring several prominent YouTubers, including Ranveer Allahabadia (popularly known as BeerBiceps). The contestant was asked an offensive hypothetical question, which led to widespread backlash, legal action, and political involvement.
On Wednesday, Raina’s legal team informed the authorities that he is in the U.S. for a series of shows and will only return to India by March 17. However, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell dismissed the request, insisting that he must appear within the stipulated deadline.
The scandal has triggered multiple complaints, including cases filed in Maharashtra and Assam. The issue has even reached Parliament, with lawmakers raising concerns over the inappropriate content. Following the backlash, Ranveer Allahabadia publicly apologized, admitting that comedy is not his forte.
Samay Raina, too, has taken damage control measures. On Wednesday, he announced that he has deleted all episodes of ‘India’s Got Latent’ from YouTube. “My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Several other comedians, including Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija, and Jaspreet Singh, have also been summoned for questioning. The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has reportedly called more than 40 individuals for investigation, including judges and participants from previous episodes of the show.
With legal scrutiny mounting and public criticism intensifying, the fate of ‘India’s Got Latent’ and its creators hangs in the balance. The coming days will determine whether Raina and his fellow YouTubers will face further legal action or find a way to navigate through the controversy.
