Indian Railways is set to script a new chapter in premium train travel with the launch of its first-ever Vande Bharat sleeper train on the Howrah–Kamakhya (Guwahati) route. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the service on Saturday, January 17, a move that officials say will significantly enhance overnight connectivity between West Bengal and Assam.
The sleeper Vande Bharat will operate on the 958-kilometre Howrah–Kamakhya corridor, connecting major districts across both states. Key stops include Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah in West Bengal. Railway officials say the train is designed to offer faster, safer and more comfortable overnight journeys for long-distance passengers.
In terms of configuration, the train will have 16 coaches with a total passenger capacity of around 823. This includes 11 Third AC (3AC) coaches, four Second AC (2AC) coaches and one First AC (1AC) coach. The coaches are equipped with newly designed bogies featuring upgraded suspension systems, aimed at smoother rides and enhanced stability at higher speeds.
Passenger comfort and safety remain central to the new service. The interiors feature ergonomic designs with special safety parameters, while automatic doors with vestibules ensure smooth movement between coaches. Advanced safety systems such as Kavach anti-collision technology, emergency talk-back systems, CCTV cameras in all coaches and dedicated facilities for passengers with disabilities have also been incorporated.
A unique highlight of the sleeper Vande Bharat is its region-specific catering. Passengers departing from Guwahati will be served authentic Assamese cuisine, while those starting their journey from Kolkata will enjoy traditional Bengali delicacies.
The fare structure reflects its premium positioning. From Howrah to Kamakhya, fares are set at ₹2,299 for 3AC, ₹2,970 for 2AC and ₹3,640 for 1AC. Shorter routes such as Howrah–New Jalpaiguri and Howrah–Malda Town have proportionately lower fares. A minimum chargeable distance of 400 kilometres applies, along with a 5 per cent GST. Notably, the train will not offer the reservation against cancellation (RAC) option, as per a recent railway circular.
