Gopichand P Hinduja, popularly known as GP Hinduja, the chairman of the multinational Hinduja Group, passed away in London on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. He was 85. A towering figure in the world of business and industry, GP Hinduja was among the richest individuals in the world and played a defining role in expanding the Hinduja family’s vast multinational empire.
Born in January 1940 in Mumbai (then Bombay), GP Hinduja carried forward the legacy of a business empire founded by his father, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, in 1914. The family initially dealt in commodities and trading before diversifying into major industrial and financial sectors across the globe. By the late 1970s, the Hindujas had moved their base to London, from where GP Hinduja oversaw the group’s international expansion.
Following the passing of his elder brother, Srichand P Hinduja, in 2023, GP officially took over as chairman of the Hinduja Group. Under his leadership, the group strengthened its global footprint and diversified into sectors ranging from automobiles and banking to energy and digital technology.
The Hinduja family, led by GP Hinduja, consistently topped the UK’s wealth rankings. According to The Sunday Times Rich List 2025, the family retained its position as the wealthiest in the United Kingdom, with an estimated fortune exceeding £35 billion.
The Hinduja Group’s diverse business interests include mobility through Ashok Leyland, one of India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers; banking and finance through IndusInd Bank; oil and lubricants via Gulf Oil; and digital solutions through Hinduja Global Solutions (HGS). The conglomerate also has significant investments in renewable energy under Hinduja Renewables, media through NXT DIGITAL, as well as ventures in real estate, healthcare, and project development.
The four Hinduja brothers—Srichand, Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok—collectively built the group into one of the world’s most diversified business families. While GP Hinduja managed operations from London, Prakash is based in Monaco, and Ashok oversees Indian operations from Mumbai.
GP Hinduja’s passing marks the end of an era for one of the most influential Indian-origin business families in the world. His vision, leadership, and commitment to global enterprise transformed the Hinduja Group into a symbol of international success rooted in Indian heritage.
