In a resounding display of dominance, India secured the Asia Cup title by annihilating defending champions Sri Lanka with a commanding 10-wicket victory in the final match at the R Premadasa Stadium. Mohammed Siraj emerged as the star of the match, delivering a career-best performance with the ball, where he claimed an astonishing 6 wickets for just 21 runs, including a sensational four-wicket over.
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka’s innings unravelled disastrously as they were bundled out for a meagre 50 runs in just 15.2 overs. Their scorecard bore the ignominy of five batsmen registering ducks, with Mohammed Siraj emerging as the chief architect of their demise.
Siraj’s fiery spell of pace bowling was epitomized during his second over when the right-arm quick dismissed Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva, stunning the Sri Lankan batting order.
Hardik Pandya contributed significantly with three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed one, adding to Sri Lanka’s misery. This woeful batting display resulted in Sri Lanka recording their second-lowest total in one-day internationals, managing to last just 92 balls.
India’s response to the modest target was swift and resounding, as they reached the required runs in a mere 6.1 overs. This victory served as a timely morale booster for India, as they prepare to host the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to begin next month.
After the match, an elated Mohammed Siraj commented, “It’s like a dream… I realized you get whatever is in your destiny. I just tried to bowl my line and length, and wickets kept coming. The ball did not swing much in the early matches here, but today it swung a lot. My effort was to draw the batters forward and make them play the ball.”
The Indian team displayed strategic brilliance by opting for a left-right opening combination, sending Ishan Kishan to partner with Shubman Gill. This decision paid off, as the openers scored freely, avoiding any dramatic disruptions. Ishan Kishan, who remained unbeaten at 23, secured the winning run in a final match that concluded in just 21.3 overs. Shubman Gill, the tournament’s top scorer, also remained unbeaten, contributing 27 runs.
Sri Lanka’s coach, Chris Silverwood, expressed his disappointment with the team’s “below-par” batting performance, stating, “The way we got dismissed is very disappointing. I think there’s a lot of reflection to be done in the dressing room. I thought Siraj was superb … the Indian bowlers made our life difficult but, at the same time, I think we made our own life difficult as well.”
Following this victory, India is set to host Australia in a three-match ODI series, with the two teams slated to face each other again on October 8 in their World Cup opener in Chennai.
