The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has penned a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, demanding immediate action to enhance the safety of women doctors across the country. This appeal comes in response to a recent and heinous incident in Kolkata, where a young woman doctor was brutally raped and murdered, sending shockwaves throughout the medical community and the nation at large.
The IMA, representing over 3 lakh doctors in India, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of violent crimes against women in the healthcare sector. The association emphasized that women doctors, who often work in challenging and high-pressure environments, must be provided with a secure and safe workplace.
In the letter, the IMA highlighted that the incident in Kolkata is not an isolated case but part of a disturbing trend of rising violence against women healthcare professionals. They urged the Health Ministry to implement stringent security protocols, particularly in hospitals and medical institutions, to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal crime committed against our colleague in Kolkata. Women doctors are the backbone of our healthcare system, and it is imperative that they feel safe and secure while performing their duties. We urge the Health Minister to take immediate steps to ensure their safety,” the IMA stated in the letter.
The association also suggested the installation of CCTV cameras on hospital premises, the deployment of security personnel, and the establishment of emergency helplines for women doctors. Additionally, the IMA called for strict enforcement of laws against those who commit acts of violence against medical professionals.
The tragic incident in Kolkata has sparked widespread outrage, with numerous protests and candlelight vigils being held in solidarity with the victim. Many within the medical community are now calling for systemic changes to ensure that such an incident never happens again.
As the nation awaits a response from the Health Ministry, the IMA’s call for action underscores the urgent need to address the safety concerns of women doctors in India, who play a crucial role in the country’s healthcare system.
