Glaw Lake Becomes Arunachal Pradesh’s First Ramsar Site, India’s 101st Wetland of International Importance

Glaw Lake, a pristine freshwater wetland nestled in the remote wilderness of Arunachal Pradesh’s Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, has been designated as the state’s first Ramsar Site and the 101st Ramsar Site in India. The announcement was made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, marking a significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen wetland conservation and biodiversity protection.

The recognition brings global attention to one of the Eastern Himalayas’ most ecologically important freshwater ecosystems. Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance recognized under the Ramsar Convention, an international environmental treaty adopted in 1971 to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands around the world. The convention seeks to protect ecosystems that play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, supporting wildlife habitats, regulating water cycles, and mitigating climate change impacts.

Sharing the news on social media, Bhupender Yadav described Glaw Lake as a biodiversity hotspot and highlighted its importance for water security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. He noted that the lake is fed by perennial mountain streams and surrounded by dense vegetation, creating an ideal habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species.

According to the Environment Minister, more than 150 species of trees and 49 species of orchids have been documented within the wetland and its surrounding catchment area. The lake’s location inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve further enhances its ecological value, as the protected landscape supports numerous wildlife species and contributes to the conservation of the Eastern Himalayan ecosystem.

Yadav also emphasized India’s growing leadership in wetland conservation. He pointed out that the country had only 26 Ramsar Sites in 2014, but that number has now risen to 101. The expansion reflects India’s commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development under internationally recognized conservation frameworks.

The designation of Glaw Lake as a Ramsar Site is expected to strengthen conservation efforts in the region. Ramsar recognition encourages governments to develop and implement management plans aimed at protecting wetlands while balancing the needs of local communities and sustainable resource use. Such sites often become models for conservation, research, and eco-friendly development initiatives.

Ramsar Sites are selected based on their ecological, botanical, zoological, limnological, or hydrological significance. To qualify, a wetland must meet at least one of nine internationally recognized criteria, including supporting vulnerable species, maintaining biological diversity, or serving as an important habitat for wildlife.

With Glaw Lake joining the prestigious list, Arunachal Pradesh has secured its first Ramsar Site, further highlighting the ecological wealth of India’s northeastern region. The recognition underscores the importance of preserving fragile mountain ecosystems and reinforces India’s commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage for future generations.
