On Sunday, just a day before Charlie Kirk’s funeral in Arizona, FBI Director Kash Patel provided a detailed update on the ongoing federal investigation into the conservative activist’s murder earlier this month. The high-profile case, which has gripped both political circles and the public, now sees 22-year-old suspect Tyler Robinson in custody as authorities piece together the motives and circumstances behind the September 10 shooting at Utah Valley University.
Patel’s Saturday briefing sought to address the swirl of theories that have emerged since Kirk’s death. Among them, one of the least-discussed yet most sensational claims is what some have labeled the “plane theory.” According to viral social media speculation, radar data suggested that a plane departing from an airport near the shooting location allegedly turned off its transponders at a suspicious time. This fueled conspiracy narratives linking the aircraft to Kirk’s assassination.
The FBI chief, however, dismissed these claims. He confirmed that the agency has conducted interviews with the pilot involved and consulted directly with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). “The responder was not turned off,” Patel clarified, explaining that “incomplete flight data in rural areas caused the apparent gap” that fueled the online rumor. He emphasized that while the FBI continues to investigate all leads, such unverified claims only distract from the ongoing fact-based probe.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against Tyler Robinson are moving forward. Robinson made his first court appearance in Provo, Utah, on Tuesday, September 16, where prosecutors from the Utah County Attorney’s office announced seven charges against him. These include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
Robinson is being held without bail at the Utah County Jail as the investigation continues to unravel both his actions and possible motives. Patel noted that the FBI will provide more concrete answers “when details are confirmed,” but stressed that the agency is examining every possible angle with thoroughness.
Kirk’s death has left a significant void among his supporters and sparked intense public debate. As his family and followers prepare to say their final goodbyes at his funeral, federal and local authorities continue working to ensure that the case is fully resolved and justice is delivered.
