Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, a 1996-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Currently serving as the additional secretary in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Kidwai’s new role was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Friday.
This strategic appointment comes at a time of transformation and challenges in India’s aviation sector, marked by unprecedented growth. Kidwai succeeds Vikram Dev Dutt, a 1993-batch IAS officer who served as DGCA director general until October 20, 2024, when he was appointed as the coal secretary. Following Dutt’s departure, Dinesh Chand Sharma, the senior-most joint director general at DGCA, held additional charge of the regulator.
Kidwai’s administrative career is distinguished by his leadership in various critical roles, including stints as head of Madhya Pradesh’s tourism and transport departments. These roles have equipped him with extensive experience in handling complex systems and formulating impactful policies. As he steps into his role as the head of DGCA, he faces a dual challenge: managing safety concerns like pilot fatigue and addressing supply chain bottlenecks that affect the burgeoning aviation sector.
The Indian aviation industry is expanding rapidly, with increased passenger demand and the arrival of newer players. However, this growth also brings a host of issues related to operational safety, infrastructure, and regulation. Kidwai’s appointment signals a focused approach toward addressing these critical areas to ensure sustainable development in the sector.
In related appointments, the ACC has named Ashutosh Agnihotri, a 1999-batch IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, as chairman and managing director of the Food Corporation of India. Agnihotri previously served as additional secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Additionally, Akash Tripathi, a 1998-batch IAS officer and current CEO of MyGov, will transition to the role of additional secretary in the power ministry.
Kidwai’s leadership at DGCA is expected to shape the future of Indian aviation, focusing on robust regulatory frameworks and enhanced safety standards.
