The Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJDF), a coalition of five medical associations, will approach the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday after being denied permission to hold a protest at Doreena Crossing, Kolkata. The planned demonstration, set to run from December 17 to December 26, aimed to demand a supplementary CBI charge sheet in the RG Kar rape and murder case.
The Kolkata Police, in their refusal, cited potential traffic congestion during the Christmas and New Year seasons as the main reason for the denial. “Your scheduled programme at the proposed venue during the festive season will cause great inconvenience to the public. We fear that allowing this event could lead to a breach of peace,” the police stated in an official email to WBJDF.
The doctors’ coalition had earlier staged a march to the CBI office in Salt Lake, seeking expedited justice in the RG Kar case. The victim’s mother, still grieving her loss, expressed her frustration with the investigation’s progress. “So many days have passed, and I am still clueless about what happened to my daughter on August 9. The CBI has yet to file a supplementary charge sheet,” she told reporters.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, saw the semi-nude body of a young female medic discovered in RG Kar Hospital’s seminar hall. Following initial police investigations, the case was handed over to the CBI. However, delays in filing a charge sheet led to bail being granted to the former principal Sandip Ghosh and ex-police officer Abhijit Mondal, both accused in the case.
WBJDF leaders have emphasised their commitment to seeking justice for the victim and her family. “We will continue our fight for accountability and transparency,” a spokesperson said.
The Calcutta High Court will now decide whether the medics can proceed with their planned sit-in, as their calls for justice remain unanswered.
