Delhi University Urges Students to Avoid Jantar Mantar Protest, Warns of Legal Consequences

Delhi University (DU) has issued an advisory urging its students and faculty members to refrain from participating in the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar, warning that involvement in unlawful gatherings could lead to legal consequences and affect academic and professional prospects.

The advisory comes amid a continuing demonstration led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which has mobilised supporters, student groups and civil society organisations over allegations related to examination irregularities and police action against protesters.

In a statement shared on social media, the university stressed that the safety and well-being of students remain its top priority. DU noted that assemblies and demonstrations at Jantar Mantar are subject to strict regulations and that participation in unlawful gatherings may attract legal action.

The university cautioned students that involvement in such activities could extend beyond immediate legal concerns. According to the advisory, participation in unauthorised protests may expose students to safety risks and could potentially impact their academic progress and future career opportunities. The administration therefore urged students to comply with the law and prioritise their personal security.

Apart from the warning on legal and safety issues, Delhi University also highlighted concerns about misinformation circulating online. The university advised students to remain vigilant and critically assess information being shared on social media, noting that misleading and fabricated content can contribute to heightened tensions during sensitive situations.

The development comes as educational institutions across the country grapple with student activism linked to examination controversies. In a related incident, a student body at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras alleged that institute officials asked it to remove an Instagram video expressing solidarity with students protesting over examination-related issues. The group also claimed that permission for a peaceful gathering was denied on the grounds that it could affect the institution’s image and its relationship with the central government.

The student organisation, ChintaBAR, stated that it had sought approval to organise a peaceful event supporting students affected by alleged irregularities in national-level entrance examinations, including NEET-UG and UGC-NET. The group also expressed support for students participating in protests in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the CJP has intensified its campaign by calling for a nationwide protest on July 24. Through social media posts and campaign material, the party has urged supporters to organise peaceful demonstrations in districts across India under the slogan “Every District. One Day. One Demand.”

According to the party, the nationwide mobilisation aims to express solidarity with individuals who it claims were subjected to police action during recent protests. Supporters have been encouraged to gather at designated locations and publicly read out a list of demands put forward by students.

As tensions surrounding the protests continue, authorities and educational institutions are closely monitoring developments while appealing for peaceful conduct and adherence to legal guidelines.
