Congress Hopes PM Will Engage LoPs, Key Leaders on Escalating India-Canada Tensions

In light of the worsening diplomatic crisis between India and Canada, the Congress party expressed its hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take opposition leaders into confidence. Senior Congress leaders emphasized the need for a collective national response to the ongoing tensions, particularly engaging with Leaders of the Opposition (LoPs) and other key political figures.

The strain in India-Canada ties has deepened following accusations and counter-accusations between the two governments over alleged interference in internal matters. The diplomatic spat, triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments regarding India’s involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist, has led to a series of actions, including mutual expulsion of diplomats.

In a statement issued on Monday, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh highlighted the importance of transparency and collaboration during such a critical juncture. “The Prime Minister must consult with all political stakeholders, including the Leaders of the Opposition, before making any further diplomatic decisions. This is a matter of national interest, and all parties must be united,” said Ramesh.

Congress also emphasized that the escalating situation could have serious implications for India’s international standing and for the Indian diaspora in Canada. The party urged the government to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad and called for a more measured approach to the crisis.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have maintained that the government’s firm stance on safeguarding India’s sovereignty remains non-negotiable. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently reiterated that the Modi government will not tolerate any foreign interference in India’s internal affairs.

Political analysts are closely watching how the Modi administration will navigate the strained relationship with Canada, particularly as the issue also involves delicate community dynamics within India. Both countries are major trade partners, and any prolonged tension could affect bilateral relations, including economic and cultural ties.
