In a significant move to bolster administrative efficiency and drive development in Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory. The announcement was made during his visit to Leh, where Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing governance and ensuring the welfare of the local population.
The newly proposed districts include Nubra, Zanskar, Drass, Padum, and Sankoo, which will be carved out from the existing Leh and Kargil districts. The decision follows extensive consultations with local stakeholders, including Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) and community leaders.
“Creating these new districts will bring governance closer to the people, ensuring faster delivery of services and more focused developmental initiatives,” Shah stated during a public rally in Leh. He further added that the move would address the unique geographical and cultural needs of the region, which have often been a challenge due to the vast and rugged terrain.
The Home Minister also highlighted the Centre’s efforts to develop infrastructure in the region, including road connectivity, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions. He assured that the creation of the new districts would be accompanied by the necessary administrative support and financial resources to ensure smooth functioning.
The decision has been widely welcomed by local leaders and the general public, who see it as a step towards better governance and inclusive growth. However, some political analysts have raised concerns about the potential challenges of managing the newly created districts, especially in terms of resource allocation and administrative coordination.
The announcement comes at a time when Ladakh, which was carved out as a separate Union Territory in August 2019, continues to undergo significant political and administrative changes. The creation of new districts is expected to play a crucial role in addressing local demands and further integrating the region into the national mainstream.
As Ladakh moves forward with this new administrative structure, the Centre’s focus remains on balancing the region’s development with its unique cultural and environmental sensitivities.
