BJP Suffers Two Key Defeats in Assembly Bypolls, Prashant Kishor Secures First Electoral Victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a challenging outcome in the latest round of assembly bypolls, managing to retain only one of the three seats that went to polls in states currently governed by the party. The results delivered a significant political setback to the BJP, particularly in Bihar, where Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor secured his first-ever electoral victory.

The most closely watched contest took place in Bihar’s Bankipur assembly constituency. Prashant Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a margin of 19,324 votes, ending the BJP’s long-standing hold over the seat. The constituency had remained in BJP hands since 1995, making the result a major political development ahead of future electoral battles in the state.

The Bankipur bypoll was necessitated after BJP national president Nitin Nabin vacated the assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. For Kishor, the victory marks a milestone in his political journey. His Jan Suraaj Party, which failed to win a single seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, has now secured its first representation in the state legislature.

During the campaign, Kishor argued that Jan Suraaj had already begun reshaping Bihar’s political discourse despite not being in power. The Bankipur result is likely to strengthen his claim and boost the party’s credibility among voters seeking alternatives to traditional political formations.

The bypoll also highlighted a significant decline in support for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The party’s candidate received fewer than 15,000 votes, a sharp drop from the more than 46,000 votes it secured in the constituency during the previous assembly election. The outcome suggests that anti-BJP votes may have consolidated behind Kishor’s campaign rather than traditional opposition parties.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP suffered another setback as Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP nominee Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes in Datia. The Congress successfully retained the seat, which it had originally won in the 2023 state assembly elections. The result provided a morale boost to the opposition party in a state where the BJP remains the dominant political force.

The lone bright spot for the BJP came from Gujarat, where the party successfully defended the Manjalpur assembly seat. The victory prevented a complete sweep by the opposition and allowed the BJP to maintain its strong electoral position in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state.

The bypoll results come at a politically sensitive moment for the BJP-led central government. The outcomes were announced just days after widespread student-led protests erupted over examination paper leak controversies. The protests, which saw strong participation from young voters and job aspirants, eventually led to a change in the Union Education Ministry.

Political observers believe the bypoll results, particularly the Bankipur outcome, could have implications beyond the three constituencies. The victories for Prashant Kishor and the Congress may encourage opposition forces ahead of upcoming state and national political contests, while the BJP may be forced to reassess its strategy in regions where voter sentiment appears to be shifting.
