Bihar Floods: Thousands Cut Off in Muzaffarpur as Schools and Homes Submerged

Thousands of residents in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, have been left stranded as severe floods caused by relentless monsoon rains have inundated the region. The rising waters have submerged homes, schools, and roads, cutting off entire communities and forcing many to seek refuge on rooftops and higher ground.

The floods, which began earlier this week, have affected several districts across Bihar, with Muzaffarpur being one of the hardest-hit areas. Local authorities report that the swollen Bagmati and Burhi Gandak rivers have breached their banks, exacerbating the situation and complicating rescue and relief efforts.

“We are facing an unprecedented crisis,” said Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Pranav Kumar. “The flooding has severely disrupted life here. Thousands of people are stranded, and many have lost their homes and belongings. Our immediate priority is to ensure their safety and provide them with necessary aid.”

Rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed to evacuate residents and distribute relief supplies. Boats and helicopters are being used to reach the most isolated areas, delivering food, water, and medical assistance.

Schools in the region have been converted into temporary shelters, providing refuge to displaced families. However, these makeshift arrangements are struggling to cope with the overwhelming number of affected individuals.

“We have set up relief camps in several schools,” said a local official. “But the sheer scale of the disaster means we are stretched thin. We urgently need more resources to help those in need.”

The flooding has also led to widespread power outages and disrupted communication networks, further hampering relief operations. Health concerns are mounting as stagnant water raises the risk of waterborne diseases.

Residents have expressed frustration and fear over the situation. “Our house is completely underwater,” said Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Muzaffarpur. “We are staying at a school with hundreds of others. The conditions are dire, and we don’t know when we will be able to return home.”

The Bihar state government has announced immediate financial assistance for affected families and is coordinating with central authorities to expedite relief measures. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has conducted aerial surveys of the flood-affected areas and assured residents that every effort is being made to provide relief.

As the monsoon rains continue, the situation remains critical, with meteorological departments forecasting more rainfall in the coming days. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with rescue teams.
