Assam state government renames Karimganj district to Sribhumi

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Karimganj district has been officially renamed as Sribhumi, drawing inspiration from Rabindranath Tagore’s historical description of the region.

In a post on X, Sarma explained the significance of the new name, stating that “Sribhumi” translates to “the land of Goddess Lakshmi.” He emphasized that the renaming fulfils a long-standing demand of the people, as Tagore himself had referred to modern-day Karimganj by this name over a century ago.

Honouring Tagore’s Vision

“Over 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore described modern-day Karimganj as ‘Sribhumi.’ Today, the Assam Cabinet has honoured this vision by restoring the name,” Sarma wrote. A poster shared by the Chief Minister underscored the government’s aim to restore the historical and cultural glory of Assam’s southernmost district.

The decision was described as reflective of the “expectations and aspirations” of the district’s residents. Sarma highlighted that place names should carry historical or linguistic significance, adding that the government has been gradually renaming places across Assam to align with cultural and historical roots.

“Sribhumi” and the Drive for Meaningful Names

Speaking to India Today NE, Sarma explained that many place names in Assam lack historical or linguistic relevance. For example, he cited the recent renaming of Kalapahar, a place name absent from both Assamese and Bengali dictionaries.

“Karimganj similarly lacks meaning in these dictionaries. Names should reflect cultural and linguistic identity, and this change ensures that Sribhumi carries significance in both Assamese and Bengali contexts,” Sarma said.

He also referred to previous renaming initiatives, such as the revision of village names like Bhasoni Chowk in Barpeta, as part of the government’s broader mission to preserve Assam’s cultural heritage.

Future Renaming Plans

Sarma hinted that more places in Assam might undergo renaming to better reflect the state’s historical and linguistic identity. “We aim to restore cultural context through meaningful names that resonate with our heritage,” he added.

The decision to rename Karimganj has sparked discussions on the importance of preserving historical narratives, with the government reiterating its commitment to upholding Assam’s cultural pride and linguistic roots.
