Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 80; Over 2 Lakh People Still Affected Across Four Districts

Assam’s flood crisis continues to leave a significant humanitarian impact despite gradual improvements in water levels across several regions. The death toll from this year’s floods has climbed to 80 after two more fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Thursday.

The two latest deaths were reported from Sivasagar district, where a boy and another individual reportedly drowned in floodwaters. With these casualties, the total number of people who have lost their lives in flood-related incidents across the state this year has reached 80.

While the overall flood situation has shown signs of easing, more than 2.12 lakh people remain affected in four districts of Upper Assam—Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar. According to ASDMA’s daily flood report, Charaideo remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 80,000 residents impacted by the deluge. Sivasagar follows with around 71,000 affected people, while Jorhat has reported approximately 40,000 people facing flood-related hardships.

Officials noted that the number of affected people has declined from over three lakh reported a day earlier, indicating a gradual improvement in conditions. However, large-scale relief and rescue operations continue across the affected regions.

To support displaced families, authorities are currently operating 112 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the four districts. More than 75,500 people are taking shelter in these facilities, where food, medical aid and essential supplies are being provided.

Rescue operations have involved multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, police personnel and local civil administration teams. These agencies have been working round the clock to evacuate stranded residents and provide assistance to vulnerable communities.

The state government has also continued large-scale relief distribution. During the last 24 hours, authorities supplied over 918 quintals of rice, nearly 204 quintals of pulses, more than 146 quintals of salt and over 17,500 litres of mustard oil to flood-affected residents.

Despite the improving trend, the damage remains extensive. ASDMA reported that 437 villages remain submerged under floodwaters, while more than 17,198 hectares of agricultural land have suffered damage. The floods have also affected key infrastructure, including embankments, roads, bridges and public facilities in several districts.

Hydrological conditions remain under close monitoring, with the Dhansiri River continuing to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh. Authorities are keeping a watch on river levels as fresh rainfall in parts of the Northeast could influence the flood situation in the coming days.

The floods have also severely impacted livestock, with nearly 2.97 lakh domestic animals and poultry affected across the state. Officials continue to assess losses while focusing on relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts for affected communities.
