The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified that Aadhaar cannot be considered a valid proof of date of birth (DOB), even though it remains widely accepted as a proof of identity. The clarification comes through an official document highlighting that the Aadhaar Act, 2016 does not explicitly recognize Aadhaar as evidence of a person’s date of birth.
According to UIDAI, Aadhaar’s primary purpose is to establish identity through authentication. It confirms that the person seeking a service or subsidy is the same individual who enrolled using biometrics and submitted documents at the time of registration. However, this does not extend to validating the accuracy of the date of birth mentioned on the card.
The authority emphasized that in cases where the correctness of the date of birth is questioned, the responsibility lies entirely with the Aadhaar holder to provide valid supporting documents. This means Aadhaar alone cannot be relied upon in legal, administrative, or official disputes related to age or date of birth.
UIDAI also noted that individual Aadhaar User Agencies (AUAs) and e-KYC User Agencies (KUAs) have the discretion to decide whether or not they will accept Aadhaar as a supporting document for date of birth. This could lead to variations in how Aadhaar is treated across institutions.
While the Aadhaar system does collect and maintain demographic details, including date of birth, this information is primarily used for identity verification and authentication processes, not as certified proof.
For those looking to update or correct their date of birth in Aadhaar records, UIDAI has listed several acceptable documents. These include a birth certificate, a valid Indian passport, a service photo identity card, a pensioner photo ID, or mark sheets and certificates issued by recognized educational boards.
The clarification reinforces the need for individuals to maintain proper documentation for age verification, especially for official and legal purposes where Aadhaar alone may not suffice.
