A devastating fire tore through a five-storey bed-and-breakfast establishment in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of 21 people. Authorities have confirmed that a significant number of the victims were foreign nationals residing or staying in the building.
According to officials and people familiar with the investigation, at least 18 of those killed were citizens of various countries, including Nigeria, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Somalia, Liberia, and Afghanistan. The identities of the victims are being verified through official channels, while embassies and diplomatic missions of the affected countries are being informed about the tragedy.
The fire broke out in the Hauz Rani locality of Malviya Nagar during the early hours of Wednesday. Witnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke and flames rapidly spreading through the building, trapping many occupants inside before emergency responders could reach them.
Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene soon after receiving distress calls. Multiple fire tenders were deployed to contain the blaze, while rescue personnel worked to evacuate residents and guests from the upper floors. Despite their efforts, several occupants succumbed to smoke inhalation and burn injuries.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary findings suggest that the blaze spread quickly through the structure, although officials have not yet confirmed whether any fire safety violations contributed to the scale of the disaster.
