Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, has announced an all-women transition team following his landmark victory, marking a historic moment in the city’s political landscape. Mamdani, who will officially assume office on January 1, 2026, is the first Indian-origin, African-born Muslim to become mayor of New York.
At his first post-election briefing held at the Unisphere in Queens, Mamdani declared that his transition would be guided entirely by women leaders with deep experience in governance, policy, and city administration. The move, widely seen as a progressive and inclusive step, signals Mamdani’s commitment to diverse leadership and reform-driven governance.
The transition team will be spearheaded by Elana Leopold, a well-known progressive political strategist, who has been appointed as the transition’s executive director. She will be joined by four co-chairs — Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor under Eric Adams; Lina Khan, former chair of the Federal Trade Commission; Grace Bonilla, a respected nonprofit leader; and Melanie Hartzog, a veteran city budget expert.
All five women have previously played crucial roles in shaping New York City’s policy landscape under former mayors Bill de Blasio, Eric Adams, and Michael Bloomberg. Their collective expertise spans urban development, consumer protection, social equity, and fiscal management — areas Mamdani is expected to prioritise in his administration.
Mamdani’s victory came after a closely watched race against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. His campaign, centred on affordable housing, police reform, and climate resilience, resonated strongly with voters across boroughs, particularly in Queens and Brooklyn.
By choosing an all-women team to lead the transition, Mamdani has not only made a bold political statement but also set a tone for his upcoming administration — one that emphasizes inclusivity, transparency, and the empowerment of women in leadership.
