Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned a Russian drone strike that resulted in the deaths of five civilians, including a one-year-old child, in the city of Pryluky, central Ukraine. The attack targeted a family home, killing three generations of the same family—a firefighter’s wife, daughter, and grandson. The assault occurred while the firefighter was responding to an earlier attack, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the assault.
Zelensky accused Russia of attempting to “buy time for itself to continue killing,” emphasizing that such actions underscore the need for “maximum sanctions” and increased international pressure on Moscow. He called on the United States, Europe, and other global powers to take decisive action to halt these atrocities.
The attack in Pryluky is part of a broader escalation in hostilities, with Russia launching a massive assault using 103 drones and a ballistic missile across multiple Ukrainian regions, including Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, and Kherson. In Kharkiv, 19 people were injured, including children and a pregnant woman, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko.
These developments come amid heightened tensions following Ukraine’s recent drone strike on Russian military airfields, which destroyed several nuclear-capable military jets. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow would retaliate against Ukraine’s actions.
The ongoing conflict, which began in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread destruction across eastern and southern Ukraine, and millions of people displaced from their homes. Despite two rounds of talks in Istanbul aimed at ending the war, fighting and aerial attacks have intensified in recent weeks.
As the conflict continues, the international community faces increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis and hold those responsible for civilian casualties accountable.
