Two Swedish Nationals Shot Dead in Brussels Attack

A man who identified himself as a member of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a video posted online, which has sent shockwaves through the Belgian capital. The incident took place as a football match between Belgium and Sweden was about to commence, leading to heightened security measures and the highest level of terror alert being raised in Belgium.

Belgian authorities, however, have stated that there is no evidence linking the attacker, who remains on the run, to the recent conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants. Instead, they suspect that the victims’ Swedish nationality may have been the motive for this horrific act.

The attack comes in the wake of Sweden’s heightened state of alert after incidents involving the burning of the Quran and other anti-Islamic actions in the country, which had outraged some in the Muslim community and provoked threats from jihadist groups.

The suspected assailant, who identified himself as Abdesalem Al Gilani, claimed in his video to be a fighter for Allah. While the third victim’s condition is reported not to be life-threatening, Belgian authorities have urged residents of Brussels to stay indoors until the threat is resolved, and European Commission staff have also been advised to take precautions.

Belgium’s Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo, confirmed on social media that the victims were Swedish, expressing his condolences and emphasising the importance of collective efforts to combat terrorism.

Sweden’s Justice Minister, Gunnar Strommer, revealed that the Swedish government is actively collaborating with Belgian authorities to gather more information about the incident and its motives.

In response to the situation, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that all Swedes in Belgium would receive text messages urging vigilance and adherence to instructions provided by Belgian authorities.

Belgium’s Interior Minister confirmed that a federal prosecutor was handling the investigation due to the potential terrorist motive behind the attack.

Some Belgian newspapers suggest that the victims may have been soccer supporters, as the attack occurred during the Euro 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden, which was temporarily suspended for security reasons.

This tragic shooting incident takes place amidst heightened security concerns across some European nations, partly related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. In France, for instance, 7,000 additional troops are being deployed on the streets after a recent attack that President Emmanuel Macron condemned as “barbaric Islamic terrorism.”

Video footage of the Brussels attack shows a man on a scooter, clad in an orange jacket, firing several shots near a street intersection. It’s reported that the assailant shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire.

The self-declared perpetrator, Abdesalem Al Guilani, issued a video message where he claimed responsibility for the attack in the name of the Islamic State, expressing his allegiance and vowing to live and die for his religion.

In response to the incident, France is tightening controls at its border with Belgium as an added security measure.
