Donald Trump’s long-discussed vision of acquiring Greenland is gaining traction again. His House Republican allies have introduced a bill to pave the way for formal negotiations with Denmark to purchase the strategically located island.
The “Make Greenland Great Again Act”
The proposed bill, titled the “Make Greenland Great Again Act,” authorizes the President to initiate discussions with Denmark starting January 20, 2025, shortly after Trump’s inauguration. The draft bill stipulates that any agreement reached must be submitted to Congress within five days, along with all relevant documentation.
This move reignites Trump’s ambition, originally floated during his first term in office, to make Greenland a U.S. territory due to its strategic geopolitical position and abundant natural resources.
Republicans tout national security interests
Leading the charge are Tennessee Representatives Andy Ogles and Diana Harshbarger. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Ogles underscored the initiative as “essential to our national security.” He praised Trump’s America First agenda, emphasizing its importance in restoring U.S. economic and strategic dominance.
“Trump’s commitment to addressing national security threats demonstrates America’s readiness to lead again,” said Ogles, calling the acquisition of Greenland vital to both economic and security interests.
Trump’s bold vision extends beyond Greenland
Trump has reiterated Greenland’s importance, stating that U.S. national security concerns warrant bold moves. He has even hinted at the possibility of employing military or economic measures to secure strategic assets, including the Panama Canal.
When questioned by reporters about potential military or economic coercion, Trump replied, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two.”
Adding to the intrigue, Donald Trump Jr. recently visited Greenland, though it was described as a personal trip.
GOP criticism of Biden’s foreign policy
Republicans have seized the moment to critique the Biden administration, accusing it of diminishing America’s global standing. They view the Greenland initiative as a decisive step toward reclaiming U.S. influence on the world stage.
