U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that a high-profile sale of TikTok may be imminent. Speaking in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump stated that a “group of very wealthy people” is preparing to buy the popular video-sharing app, although he declined to disclose the buyers’ identities.
“We have a buyer for TikTok… I’ll need probably China approval and I think President Xi will probably do it,” Trump said on Sunday. “It’s a group of very wealthy people,” he added, suggesting a deal could be announced within the next two weeks.
Trump’s remarks come as a significant deadline looms. Under a 2024 U.S. law, TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance must divest the app’s U.S. operations by January 19 or face a nationwide ban. Trump has not ruled out the possibility of further extending the deadline, indicating flexibility if a buyer is close.
In recent months, Trump has positioned himself as a supporter of TikTok, especially among younger voters. “I have a small warm place in my heart for TikTok,” he told NBC News in May, signaling his willingness to work toward a solution that preserves the platform while addressing national security concerns.
The potential sale has ignited widespread speculation online. Social media users suggested names like Elon Musk and other tech elites might be involved. “Better we own it than China,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while another noted, “TikTok will survive. There will be a buyer. It’s happening.”
The Biden administration has also pressured ByteDance to sell TikTok over fears of Chinese surveillance, but Trump’s latest comments reinsert him into the debate with a surprising pro-TikTok tone. Whether the mystery buyer can secure both U.S. and Chinese approval remains to be seen, but for now, Trump is betting on TikTok’s future in American hands.
