Russia has issued a stark warning, threatening potential “destruction” of the newly inaugurated US military base in Redzikowo, Poland, with “a wide range of advanced weapons.” The base, part of NATO’s Aegis Ashore missile defence system, has been criticized by Moscow as a destabilizing factor escalating nuclear risks.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated the facility has been added to Moscow’s list of priority targets due to the perceived threats posed by Western military infrastructure. Poland has dismissed the threat, emphasizing the defensive nature of the base, and underscored its role in strengthening NATO’s air defences.
The development comes amidst heightened tensions following Russia’s first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) attack on Ukraine and Ukraine’s recent use of US-provided long-range missiles to strike Russian territory, actions that have intensified the prolonged conflict.
NATO describes the missile defense shield, which includes sites in Poland, and Romania, and additional components in Spain and Turkey, as a safeguard against short- to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats. However, Russia claims it undermines strategic stability and increases nuclear risks globally.
This escalation adds to the growing geopolitical strain between Russia, NATO, and the US, with potential repercussions for broader European security.
