Israeli airstrikes continued to target southern Lebanon and the outskirts of Beirut on Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least five medics. These strikes were part of Israel’s ongoing military campaign against Hezbollah, as ground troops clashed with the Iran-backed fighters in the region.
Intensifying Conflict Despite Truce Hopes
The strikes, which have killed over 3,500 people over the past year, mark a further escalation of the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a conflict that has intensified since Israel launched its strikes in late September. Despite efforts by U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein to broker a ceasefire, Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah show no sign of slowing.
Hochstein had recently travelled to Beirut, where he stated that a truce was “within our grasp,” and met with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His efforts aimed to end over a year of hostilities along Lebanon’s southern border, but Israel’s military actions have continued, with ground troops pushing deeper into Hezbollah-held areas.
Clashes and Casualties
Hezbollah claimed to have launched multiple rocket attacks on Israeli troops near the town of Khiyam, just six kilometres from the border. Israeli forces have also reportedly advanced through nearby villages, likely preparing for a larger assault on Khiyam itself.
The airstrikes on Friday hit two villages in southern Lebanon, killing five medics from a rescue group affiliated with Hezbollah, according to the Lebanese health ministry. This adds to the more than 200 medics who have been killed since the conflict began. The strikes have severely impacted Lebanon’s healthcare system, and the humanitarian toll continues to rise.
Strikes on Beirut’s Hezbollah Stronghold
Israeli forces also launched additional strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, a key Hezbollah stronghold. Videos from Reuters showed the devastating impact of these attacks, including the destruction of a multi-storey building in a massive explosion.
Despite the ongoing violence, Israel’s stated goal is to secure the return of tens of thousands of Israeli citizens who were evacuated from the northern regions due to Hezbollah’s rocket attacks in support of Hamas during the Gaza war.
The international community watches as the situation remains volatile, with prospects for peace increasingly uncertain amidst the continuing violence.
