Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) initiated the operation with a substantial deployment of troops, tanks, and armoured vehicles along the Gaza border. The IDF spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, stated, “The Israeli military is conducting a defensive operation in response to recent provocations and rocket attacks from Gaza. We aim to restore calm and security for our citizens, but the extent and duration of our operations will depend on developments on the ground.”
In response to the Israeli action, Hamas, the militant group that governs Gaza, condemned the incursion and warned of dire consequences. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem issued a statement, saying, “Israel’s actions are reckless and provocative. They bear the full responsibility for the consequences of their aggression.”
The international community, including the United Nations, has called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations to resolve the Israel-Gaza conflict. The United States and other key stakeholders have expressed deep concern about the escalating violence and have called for restraint on all sides.
