“The Indian Navy’s P-8I anti-submarine and surveillance planes ensure that no country’s warships or vessels can transit the Indian Ocean region without detection,” stated the senior naval officer.
While overseeing operations of the P-8I aircraft at INS Rajali, also known as Nacala Air Station, Captain Ajayendra Kant Singh elaborated on the Indian Navy’s surveillance capabilities. “There is no possibility that any ship or submarine could pass through the Indian Ocean region without the 312 squadrons being aware of it,” he emphasized.
As the Commanding Officer of INS 312 squadron, also referred to as Albatross, Captain Singh emphasized that at any given time, at least one P-8I aircraft is airborne to conduct surveillance over the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, monitoring ongoing activities.
The P-8I aircraft is regarded as a game-changer for the Indian Navy, playing a pivotal role in conducting surveillance across various areas of Indian interest. It has been deployed for monitoring activities in high-altitude regions such as the Ladakh sector, revealing Chinese build-up during the Doklam crisis, and conducting frequent surveillance of foreign warships and research vessels in the Indian Ocean Region.
This aircraft is often referred to as the “Guardian of the Indian Ocean Region” and has accumulated over 44,000 flight hours in the past decade while conducting surveillance in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indian Navy currently operates 12 of these aircraft, with plans to acquire an additional 6 units from the United States shortly.
The Chinese Navy has been increasingly active in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), operating submarines and warships in a region vital for the majority of its oil supplies and global trade routes.
Commander Jishnu Madhavan, another senior officer from the squadron, emphasized the P-8I aircraft’s pivotal role as the “eyes and ears” of the Indian Navy. He described the aircraft as a “game-changer” in maritime surveillance, providing a substantial advantage in the strategically significant Indian Ocean region.
The Indian Navy recently deployed a squadron of P-8Is along the Goa front, where they are responsible for monitoring the western front and facilitating rapid response as needed.
