Federal investigators have revealed that Tyler Robinson, the suspect accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, left behind chilling evidence of his intent to carry out the attack.
FBI Director Kash Patel said on Monday that Robinson had written a physical note stating he had the “opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk” and intended to do so. Though the note was later destroyed, forensic analysis and witness interviews confirmed its existence and contents.
Patel also disclosed that Robinson sent a text message to another person ahead of the shooting, explicitly stating his plan to kill the political commentator. The FBI chief, however, did not provide details on who received the message or whether anyone saw the written note before the attack.
The Washington Post reported separately that Robinson used the platform Discord to send a message to friends, admitting responsibility for the shooting. “It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this,” the message read, sent shortly before Robinson’s arrest.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was killed last Wednesday at Utah Valley University in Orem, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. He was fatally shot once with a rifle during an event on campus.
Authorities believe Robinson acted alone but continue to investigate whether anyone else may have been involved in planning the attack. He was captured after a 33-hour manhunt and is being held in a Utah jail, where officials say he has been uncooperative.
Robinson is expected to face formal charges by Tuesday during his first court appearance. State records show he was not affiliated with any political party and did not vote in the 2024 election. However, relatives told police he had recently expressed growing political opinions and dislike for Kirk.
