Canadian Authorities Condemn Demonstrations Glorifying Hamas terrorist Attack on Israel

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with other Canadian authorities, has strongly condemned demonstrations held across the country that have expressed support for the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas’ recent attack on Israel. The leaders denounced the glorification of violence and expressed solidarity with Israel in their statements.

Prime Minister Trudeau took to social media, specifically X (formerly known as Twitter), to condemn the ongoing demonstrations. He stated, “I strongly condemn the demonstrations that have taken place, and are taking place, across the country in support of Hamas’ attacks on Israel.” Trudeau emphasized that glorifying violence is unacceptable in Canada.

In addition to his social media post, Trudeau joined a solidarity gathering for Israel where he reiterated his condemnation of the Hamas terrorist attack during his address. Political leaders from various parties in Canada have expressed their support for Israel during this period of heightened tension.

When asked whether he made a distinction between pro-Palestinian protesters and those supporting the Hamas terrorist group, Trudeau’s office declined to comment.

Throughout Monday, various groups organized competing demonstrations and rallies across Canada, including Toronto, where approximately 1,000 protesters gathered as part of a demonstration organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow denounced the demonstrations held in the city, emphasizing that they were unsanctioned. She added, “The government of Canada has rightly listed Hamas as a terrorist organization.” Toronto police Deputy Chief Lauren Pouge expressed respect for the right to free speech while opposing hate speech or speech glorifying violence.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford strongly criticized the “hate rallies” that celebrated violence against innocent Israelis and labelled them as reprehensible and disgusting.

The condemnation of these demonstrations comes in the wake of the Hamas terrorist group’s surprise attack on Israel, resulting in hundreds of casualties and the seizing of hostages. The conflict has led to a significant loss of life on both sides, with Israeli TV channels reporting a death toll of 900 and numerous injuries. Israel has responded with air strikes in Gaza, leading to further casualties among Palestinians. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported 687 Palestinians killed and 3,726 wounded in Israeli air strikes since the beginning of the conflict.

Mona Ayesh, a 46-year-old Palestinian-Canadian woman who attended the Toronto protest, condemned the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and highlighted the enduring blockade imposed on Gaza for 16 years since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007. Her perspective sheds light on the complexity of the situation, with diverse voices seeking to be heard amid the ongoing conflict.
