Winter has officially arrived, bringing with it the irresistible urge to curl up indoors and soak in all things warm and comforting. But you don’t need a complete home makeover to enjoy that snug, inviting feeling. With a few intentional décor tweaks, your space can look winter-ready, feel cosier, and exude a calming sense of warmth.
HT Lifestyle spoke to Sanaa Ruia, Creative Director at MAIA Estates, who shared simple yet impactful ways to bring winter charm into your home. According to her, “Bringing warmth into a home for winter is less about a full overhaul and more about a few thoughtful shifts. The season naturally invites deeper tones, softer textures and gentler lighting, all of which can be introduced with ease.”
Below are the five easy décor hacks she recommends:
1. Transform your interiors with warm lighting
Lighting sets the mood of any room, and winter is the perfect time to give it a cosy makeover. Swap harsh white lights for bulbs with warm, amber tones to instantly soften the ambience. Pair them with rich lampshades in colours like rust, wine, burgundy or chocolate. Bases made from brass, alabaster or silk not only add a luxe touch but also enhance the overall glow. These minor changes can completely shift the mood of your space.
2. Add a warm scent to complete the mood
Once the lighting is set, fragrance becomes the anchor of your winter-ready decor. Choose scented candles or diffusers in cinnamon, sandalwood, amber or oudh. Arrange them on mirrored or metallic trays to elevate the aesthetic. These comforting aromas create a soothing warmth that envelops the room even before the décor catches your eye.
3. Bring in cosy textures
Winter décor is incomplete without layers of texture. Think velvet cushions, bouclé upholstery, knitted throws or chunky blankets draped over sofas and chairs. These elements introduce comfort without adding visual heaviness. Textured fabrics on wardrobes, panels or headboards can also soften sharp lines and create a more cocoon-like feel.
4. Use winter florals and seasonal accents
Introduce deeper, richer tones with winter florals such as branches, berries or pine stems arranged in tall vases. Pair them with metallic accents in brass or bronze to add visual depth. Artwork in shades of wine, rust or maroon blends perfectly with the winter palette, making your interiors feel warm yet stylish.
5. Style your space for winter entertaining through microlayering
Hosting during winter calls for décor that feels grounded and inviting. Opt for deeper stoneware, wooden serving boards, subtle fairy lights and layered table linens. This is where the concept of microlayering shines—small but deliberate additions such as textured napkins, reflective trays, wooden chargers or leather-bound books create depth and warmth across the room.
Sanaa Ruia adds that these thoughtful touches work together harmoniously without feeling overwhelming. You don’t need a big renovation—just smart layering, warm tones and cosy textures that allow winter warmth to naturally settle into your space.
