Kashmir has transformed into a snowy paradise as the Valley experiences its first significant snowfall of the season. This year, the iconic winter spectacle, ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ began on December 21, ushering in a season of unparalleled beauty and frigid temperatures. From skiing in Gulmarg to exploring snow trails in Sonamarg, here’s why Kashmir is the ultimate winter destination in 2024.
Several areas across Kashmir were graced with fresh snowfall on Friday, including popular tourist hubs like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance brought light to moderate snowfall across higher altitudes and rain in lower regions. Srinagar, the heart of the valley, also witnessed its season’s first snowflakes, marking the onset of the much-anticipated winter season.
Gulmarg, renowned for its world-class skiing facilities, recorded temperatures plunging to minus 6 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, the serene base for the Amarnath Yatra, experienced a bone-chilling low of minus 8 degrees Celsius. Sonamarg, another jewel of Kashmir, dazzled with its pristine snow trails, attracting trekkers and nature enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the valley, Kupwara recorded a low of minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, while Konibal in Pampore emerged as the coldest spot at a staggering minus 9.5 degrees Celsius. The freezing temperatures caused water supply lines to freeze and a delicate layer of ice to form over the Dal Lake, adding to the region’s magical charm.
The heavy snowfall temporarily closed key roads, including the Srinagar-Leh Highway and the Mughal Road, but this has not deterred tourists eager to explore Kashmir’s winter allure. The IMD has forecasted predominantly dry weather from December 29 to 31, with a chance of light snowfall from January 1 to 5, making it an ideal window for travel.
Kashmir’s ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ lasting until January 30, is notorious for its harsh cold but also guarantees the heaviest snowfall of the year. Visitors can indulge in winter sports, cozy up in traditional Kashmiri homes, and revel in the Valley’s breathtaking winter landscapes.
