In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Navneet Arora, MD (Internal Medicine), FGID (Infectious Disease), Paras Health, Panchkula, emphasized the importance of Vitamin D in preventing osteoporosis, improving muscle and nerve function, and enhancing immunity. However, he also warned against excessive intake.
How Much Vitamin D is Too Much?
Dr. Arora explained that while Vitamin D has numerous benefits, consuming it in excess can be harmful. When blood Vitamin D levels exceed 375 nmol/L (150 ng/mL), side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and kidney stones can occur. Extremely high levels may even result in kidney failure, abnormal heart rhythms, and in rare cases, death.
Excessive Vitamin D intake is usually linked to overuse of supplements. The body naturally regulates Vitamin D production from sunlight, preventing toxicity.
Recommended Daily Intake of Vitamin D
According to Dr. Arora, the recommended daily intake for adults aged 19 and older is 100 mcg (4,000 IU). For individuals diagnosed with a deficiency, healthcare professionals may prescribe higher doses for a limited time. However, excessive supplementation should be closely monitored to prevent adverse effects.
Best Practices for Consuming Vitamin D
To maximize absorption and avoid side effects, Vitamin D should be consumed as follows:
- With Fatty Foods: Since Vitamin D is fat-soluble, it is best absorbed when taken with fatty foods like eggs, nuts, or dairy. Taking it without fats may slow down absorption.
- Avoid Late-Night Consumption: Taking Vitamin D at night may interfere with melatonin production, potentially disrupting sleep. It is advisable to consume it in the morning or afternoon for optimal benefits.
