Madhya Pradesh police have arrested one man allegedly involved in the crime. Other than him an auto-rickshaw driver was subjected to questioning after surveillance footage from the area where the teenager sought help was reviewed. While police discovered bloodstains in the auto-rickshaw, no conclusive evidence connecting the driver to the crime was found. Police sources have disclosed that individuals are still under investigation, with circumstantial evidence being examined for additional insights.
Ujjain’s Police Chief, Sachin Sharma, had previously indicated that the girl was unable to provide her name and address, suggesting that her accent implied a connection to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, approximately 850 km away. Nonetheless, the FIR (First Information Report) on record includes the survivor’s name and her father’s name. A senior police officer has now clarified to NDTV that the girl hails from a district in Madhya Pradesh, where she resides with her grandfather and elder brother. Her family had reported her missing, and she is a Class VIII student.
Contrary to previous statements that the survivor could not provide information, the accessed FIR contains a detailed account of her ordeal as narrated by her. Based on the survivor’s statement, IPC sections related to rape and provisions of the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were invoked in the FIR, which was officially registered on Monday.
According to the latest information, the girl is originally from a Madhya Pradesh district situated more than 700 km from Ujjain, where she was discovered. Police Chief Sachin Sharma clarified that she had left her home on Sunday afternoon, embarking on a journey to Ujjain that typically takes approximately 12 hours. The incident was reported the following morning after she arrived in Ujjain, where she had been wandering the streets, as confirmed by Mr Sharma.
Additional CCTV footage that emerged during the police investigation captures the girl walking in the vicinity of Ujjain while wearing her school uniform. One set of footage, timestamped at 3 a.m., shows her in school attire. However, subsequent footage depicts her partially undressed and bleeding, indicating that the alleged crime transpired in the early hours of Monday.
The initial visuals of the girl desperately seeking assistance and receiving none had elicited widespread indignation. Notably, one man was seen rebuffing her as she approached him while partially unclothed and bleeding. Police officer Sharma, in response, clarified that it was not accurate to claim that no one aided her. He stated, “There were mixed responses. Some people did help her by providing financial assistance. A toll booth staff member also extended assistance.” Regarding the visuals that portrayed the girl being turned away, Sharma commented, “Some individuals may have had reservations, but they did help her financially. When we discovered her, she possessed ₹120,” highlighting that she was eventually rushed to the hospital after a priest from a nearby ashram alerted the police.
As public outrage and concern persist, the Ujjain rape case continues to raise questions surrounding the ongoing investigation.
