Authorities in Himachal Pradesh have issued a public safety advisory following a sharp rise in water levels at the Pandoh Dam, located in the Mandi district. The dam, which is a key component of the Beas Project, has seen significant water accumulation due to persistent rainfall and accelerated snowmelt in the upper reaches of the Himalayas.
The Mandi district administration, in coordination with the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), has cautioned residents and tourists against approaching the Beas River or its nearby tributaries. Water from the dam may be released without prior notice to maintain reservoir levels, posing potential risks of sudden surges downstream.
“In view of the rising inflow into Pandoh Dam, people living near the riverbanks must remain alert and keep a safe distance. Tourists should strictly avoid water activities near the Beas,” said a senior official from the Mandi disaster management authority.
Authorities have also alerted local village panchayats and law enforcement agencies to stay vigilant and ready for any emergency response. Boating and recreational activities along the river have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.
Pandoh Dam, constructed in the 1970s, diverts the Beas River’s water into the Sutlej River to support hydroelectric power generation at the Dehar Power House. During the monsoon season and periods of heavy glacial melt, water levels can rise rapidly, necessitating controlled releases.
Local meteorological departments have forecast continued rain in the region, further elevating the risk of waterlogging and landslides. Travelers planning to visit Mandi, Kullu, or Manali are advised to monitor weather updates and heed all advisories issued by authorities.
As the pre-monsoon season intensifies, similar alerts may be issued across other hill districts in Himachal Pradesh. Residents are urged to remain cautious and report any emergencies to the district helpline numbers.
