The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed serious concerns over the involvement of non-experts at the crime scene of the recent rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College. The case, which has shocked the city, saw the tragic death of a young woman, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
In an official statement released today, the IMA questioned the Kolkata Police’s decision to allow individuals who were not forensic experts or part of the official investigation team to access the crime scene. According to the IMA, such actions could potentially compromise the integrity of the investigation and tamper with crucial evidence.
Dr Santosh Gupta, a senior official of the IMA, stated, “We understand the gravity of the situation and the pressure on the police to act swiftly. However, it is imperative that standard protocols are strictly followed, especially in sensitive cases like this. The presence of non-experts at the crime scene raises serious questions about the handling of the investigation.”
The IMA’s concerns were echoed by several legal and forensic experts, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a controlled environment at crime scenes to ensure that evidence is preserved accurately. “Any deviation from the established protocols can lead to contamination of evidence, which may hinder the course of justice,” remarked forensic specialist Dr Arpita Sen.
The police have not yet responded to the IMA’s statement. However, sources within the Kolkata Police Department have suggested that the involvement of non-experts may have been an oversight rather than a deliberate breach of protocol.
The RG Kar Medical College case has garnered significant media attention, with activists and citizens demanding swift justice for the victim. The IMA’s intervention adds another layer of scrutiny to the ongoing investigation, highlighting the need for transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
As the investigation continues, the IMA has called for a thorough review of the procedures followed at the crime scene and urged the authorities to ensure that such lapses do not occur in the future.
