The Indian Navy’s frigate INS Brahmaputra was found resting on its side following a major fire that broke out on board late last night. The blaze, which reportedly started in the engine room, quickly spread, causing extensive damage and leading to the vessel tilting precariously.
According to naval officials, the fire broke out around 11 PM, triggering immediate emergency protocols. Despite the crew’s valiant efforts to contain the blaze, the fire proved too fierce, forcing many to evacuate to safety.
In the chaotic aftermath, one sailor was reported missing. A comprehensive search and rescue operation has been launched, with divers and specialized teams scouring the ship and surrounding waters in hopes of finding the missing crew member. “Our primary focus right now is locating our missing sailor and ensuring the safety of all personnel involved,” stated a Navy spokesperson.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though initial reports suggest a possible mechanical failure in the engine room. Experts are being brought in to assess the extent of the damage and to help stabilize the vessel, which remains partially submerged.
INS Brahmaputra, a significant asset to the Indian Navy, has served in numerous missions since its commissioning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the naval community, highlighting the inherent risks faced by those who serve at sea.
Naval Chief Admiral Karambir Singh expressed his concerns and extended his support to the families of the crew. “We are deeply saddened by this incident and are doing everything in our power to support the crew and their families during this difficult time,” he said.
