The hospital, identified as Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital, became the epicentre of a devastating blast and fireball, leaving countless casualties in its wake. Palestinian officials allege that an Israeli air strike was responsible for the catastrophic explosion, claiming that the death toll could be as high as 500 people.
Israel, in contrast, contends that the blast was the outcome of a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group. This group vehemently denied any involvement in the incident.
During a joint appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Biden expressed his deep sorrow and outrage over the hospital explosion. He emphasized his initial assessment, stating, “I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion of the hospital in Gaza yesterday, and based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you.”
President Biden continued, acknowledging the complexity of the situation, saying, “But there’s a lot of people out there not sure, so we’ve got a lot, we’ve got to overcome a lot of things. The world is looking. Israel has a value set like the United States does, and other democracies, and they are looking to see what we are going to do.”
This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over President Biden’s mission to the Middle East, which was intended to help ease tensions in the region while reaffirming U.S. support for Israel. Notably, Israel has been resolute in its determination to counter the Hamas movement, which recently carried out a deadly rampage resulting in the loss of 1,400 Israeli lives on October 7.
However, following the catastrophic hospital explosion, Arab leaders chose to cancel the second part of President Biden’s itinerary, which included a summit with Arab neighbours in Amman. The summit was intended to address the urgent need for aid to Gaza and to prevent the escalation of the conflict.
Israel expressed its gratitude to President Biden for his unwavering support, and President Isaac Herzog conveyed his appreciation, stating, “God bless you for protecting the nation of Israel.”
